Denzel Washington has confirmed his involvement in the next Black Panther film, disclosing that director Ryan Coogler is currently working on writing a new role just for him. Washington shared the news on the Today Show, where he opened up about the future projects he’s taking on as he considers the next stage of his career.
The two-time Oscar winner hinted at his desire to explore a variety of roles, saying, “I don’t know how many more films I’ll do—probably not that many. I want to do things I haven’t done yet.” Reflecting on his past, Washington added, “I played Othello when I was 22, and I’m set to play Othello again at 70 on Broadway.” This significant stage role is just the beginning of what Washington hinted could be his most diverse period yet, as he’s also set to play historical figure Hannibal and has been in discussions with director Steve McQueen about an upcoming project.
But it was his announcement of joining the Black Panther universe that stole the spotlight. “Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther,” Washington confirmed, sending fans into a frenzy with the prospect of seeing the acting legend in Marvel’s Wakandan universe.
Marvel Studios has not officially announced the third Black Panther film, but franchise star Letitia Wright, who now leads the series, recently hinted that the project was “already in the works.” Washington’s involvement would mark an exciting addition to the cast and has been welcomed as a powerful tribute to his deep connection with the late Chadwick Boseman, the original Black Panther.
The friendship between Washington and Boseman was close and heartfelt. Years ago, Boseman disclosed that Washington had “gracefully and privately” covered his tuition for a summer acting program at Oxford University, a gesture that left a lasting impact on the young actor’s life and career. In a tribute at the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Boseman celebrated Washington’s impact, saying, “There is no Black Panther without Denzel Washington.”
Fans around the world are now eagerly awaiting more news on Washington’s role in Black Panther as he steps into the Marvel universe, adding yet another iconic character to his already impressive legacy.
