Dua Lipa, the renowned Grammy-winning artist, marked a significant milestone as she commemorated the eighth anniversary of her musical debut with the single “New Love.” The song, which paved the way for her chart-topping hits like “New Rules,” “Levitating,” and “Don’t Start Now,” holds a special place in her journey to stardom.
Taking to her Instagram Story on Monday, Dua Lipa shared a heartfelt tribute to the song that introduced her to the music world. Alongside a snippet from the music video of “New Love,” she penned a reflection on her creative journey.
“In 2015, I unveiled my debut song, co-written with @wyattish [Andrew Wyatt] and @emilehaynie [Emile Haynie] (and there’s even a video!),” Lipa, who is now 27, shared in the caption. “My 19-year-old self would have been overjoyed to foresee how far we’ve come.”
“New Love” served as the initial step in Lipa’s rise to fame. While it didn’t garner instant global recognition, it set the foundation for her subsequent accomplishments. Following her debut, Lipa gained prominence in Europe with hits like “Be the One” and “Hotter Than Hell.” Her breakthrough in the United States came with “Blow Your Mind (Mwah)” in 2016.
Reflecting on the early days of her career, Lipa shared insights with The Guardian in 2020. “With every song, the momentum was building, but only tiny little bits. I was doing new things, I was learning what was expected of me, how to be in front of a camera, how to better the last performance.”
“New Love” became a cornerstone of Lipa’s self-titled debut album, released in 2017. The album catapulted her to global recognition with hits like “New Rules” and “IDGAF.” Collaborations with prominent artists like Calvin Harris (“One Kiss”) and Silk City (Mark Ronson and Diplo) (“Electricity”) further solidified her place in the music industry.
Recognition for her talent came in the form of Grammy Awards in 2019, where Dua Lipa secured victories in the categories of Best New Artist and Best Dance Recording for “Electricity.” Her success extended to the 2021 Grammy ceremony, where she clinched the award for Best Pop Vocal Album for her second release, “Future Nostalgia.”
Recent accomplishments also include another top-10 hit in the United States for Dua Lipa with “Dance the Night.” Featured in the film “Barbie,” the track’s success echoes the pattern set by her earlier hits.
As Dua Lipa reflects on the eight-year anniversary of “New Love,” it’s evident that this debut single was the foundation upon which she built her remarkable musical journey, one that has solidified her position as a global pop icon.
