Elle Fanning is venturing into uncharted territory as she joins the Predator universe in the highly anticipated film Predator: Badlands. The upcoming movie offers fans an exciting twist on the legendary sci-fi franchise, bringing a new perspective that’s sure to captivate both longtime Predator fans and newcomers alike.
In the newly released teaser trailer, 20th Century Studios gives audiences a first look at Predator: Badlands, which introduces a fresh approach to the franchise. This time, the iconic Predator isn’t just the terrifying hunter lurking in the shadows—he is the protagonist. Played by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, the young Predator named Dek embarks on a solo mission on a distant planet, where he forms an unlikely alliance with Fanning’s character, Thia. It’s hinted that Thia could be a robot, adding another layer of intrigue to the film.
The official synopsis reveals that Predator: Badlands takes place in the future, on a remote planet. Outcast from his clan, the young Predator teams up with Thia as they embark on a dangerous journey to find the ultimate adversary. The film promises an exciting blend of action, suspense, and emotional depth as the characters face challenges in a unique, alien landscape.
Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Patrick Aison, the duo previously worked together on the critically acclaimed Prey (2022). With Badlands, the filmmakers are pushing the Predator franchise into uncharted cinematic territory. Trachtenberg has revealed that while Dek remains “badass,” the character also brings surprising emotional depth: “There’s something there that touches you emotionally too.”

For Schuster-Koloamatangi, Predator: Badlands marks a significant moment in his career, following his roles in Red, White & Brass and TV series like Far North and Upright. Bringing a relatable yet intimidating Predator to life is no small feat, and Trachtenberg expressed how challenging yet exciting it was to create a character that audiences would connect with but still fear: “Creating a character you connect with but are also super-intimidated by has been challenging… but exciting.”
Elle Fanning is excited to take on a role that diverges from her usual projects. Speaking at CinemaCon in April, Fanning praised Trachtenberg’s bold vision for the film. “I was so intrigued and so struck by Dan’s vision for this film… it speaks to his creativity and passion for this world,” Fanning shared. The Super 8 actress also teased that her role in Badlands is unlike anything she’s done before. “Something unprecedented happens in this movie, and my character is not the one being chased,” Fanning said. “My character actually teams up with the Predator, and you get to see him in a completely new light.”
Predator: Badlands opens in theaters on November 7, 2024. Fans can look forward to a thrilling and innovative new chapter in the Predator franchise that promises both emotional resonance and heart-pounding action.
