Emily Blunt, the acclaimed actress known for roles in Edge of Tomorrow and Oppenheimer, recently shared candid insights about her lifelong challenge with stuttering. Speaking at the American Institute for Stuttering’s 19th Annual Gala, Blunt revealed that despite her successful career, she still experiences nervousness and stress related to her speech.
The 42-year-old actress told E! News, “My speech will be affected still… So, people will meet me and go,” highlighting the ongoing impact of stuttering on her daily interactions. She also explained how over time, she has developed strategies to manage her speech by substituting difficult words with easier alternatives.
Blunt emphasized the emotional toll stuttering can have, especially when lacking support. “When you don’t have a family like AIS, then you feel really lonely and you can feel very isolated because it does freeze up your voice and you don’t want to share your story,” she explained. According to her, stuttering can cause people to feel misunderstood or misrepresented, which intensifies feelings of loneliness.
The actress expressed a strong desire to help remove the stigma surrounding stuttering. “I think what I wish we could do is take the stigma out of it,” she said, advocating for greater awareness and empathy.
