Musician and producer Grimes is once again voicing her concerns about the dark side of social media — and this time, she’s calling out X (formerly Twitter), the platform owned by her ex-partner, Elon Musk.
On July 7, the 37-year-old Oblivion singer returned to X with a scathing critique of the platform and the broader state of online culture.
“I’ve basically been entirely off social media and returning here it is overwhelmingly, abundantly and profoundly clear that this place – and all of these places – are a poison – a prison of utterly short form deep deep-sounding nonsense attached to no one that your brain will discard imaging its learning,” Grimes wrote.
She continued, describing social media as a shallow and performative space:
“The entire thing is a theatre. A shitty pale simulacra of a life.”
Grimes Previously Criticized Social Media Culture
This isn’t the first time the artist, born Claire Elise Boucher, has criticized social media platforms. Back in April, she shared another post highlighting the mental health challenges associated with being chronically online.
“I think it’s very unhealthy to be on social media,” she wrote. “It feels like a ghost town of depression, bitterness, and pictures of beautiful women doing sext [sic] things.”
Grimes also pointed fingers at tech companies, saying:
“I feel like this is a massive moral failure of all the apps. And it’s causing great harm to society.”
Grimes Opens Up About Mental Health
In March, Grimes revealed that she had been diagnosed with ADHD and Autism, a disclosure that added further context to her comments about how digital platforms impact mental well-being.
Her candid remarks reflect growing concerns among public figures and mental health professionals about the role of social media in contributing to anxiety, disconnection, and information overload.
Grimes and Elon Musk: A Complex History
Grimes and Elon Musk were in an on-again, off-again relationship from 2018 to 2023. The former couple share three children together, and although their romantic relationship has ended, their lives remain linked through parenting and public interest.
Despite her personal ties to Musk, Grimes hasn’t hesitated to speak critically about the platform he owns. Her recent comments add to the ongoing debate about the societal consequences of algorithm-driven content and digital addiction.
