Hollywood Actors Restricted from Donning Barbie and Spiderman Costumes This Halloween

As Halloween approaches, Hollywood actors are receiving a unique directive from the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA). The 160,000 members of this influential organization have been urged not to don popular costumes like Barbie and Spiderman this year. The reason behind this unconventional request lies in the studios currently under strike by the union.

The scope of costumes to be avoided is expansive, covering beloved characters tied to major studios such as Warner Bros’ “Barbie,” Disney’s Marvel superheroes, and Netflix’s “Stranger Things.” Instead, SAG-AFTRA’s guidance, shared under the title “Make Halloween a SCREAM with these SAG-AFTRA Strike-Friendly Tips & Tricks,” encourages members to opt for more generic costume choices, like ghosts, zombies, or spiders.

A notable exception to the Halloween dress code is characters from animated TV shows. Actors are still permitted to embrace these fictional personas in their costumes, as they are not part of the ongoing strike.

The underlying message in the post is a resounding one: “Let’s use our collective power to send a loud and clear message to our struck employers that we will not promote their content without a fair contract!”

SAG-AFTRA’s strike, initiated by its members in July, revolves around several key issues, including fair compensation and concerns related to the increasing use of artificial intelligence in the industry. As the strike enters its 100th day, the situation has escalated, with recent high-level negotiations ending in a contentious manner.

This Halloween, the choices of Hollywood actors are not just about fun and games but serve as a reflection of their collective stance against the studios embroiled in the strike. The entertainment industry is at a crossroads, and the solidarity demonstrated by SAG-AFTRA members underscores their commitment to achieving equitable working conditions in the field.
