James Cameron is expanding the world of Pandora beyond the big screen, with plans for an animated anthology series that delves deeper into the Avatar universe.
In a recent interview with Empire magazine, the legendary filmmaker revealed that he’s in early talks with Disney to develop a series of animated stories set within the world of Avatar. The project is still in its conceptual phase, but Cameron has a compelling vision for the direction it could take.
“I said, ‘Look, I want to do an animated anthology series that’s essentially in the world, but stories that you wouldn’t have expected from that world,’” Cameron shared, hinting at the possibility of a future full-length animated feature.
Exploring Pandora Like Never Before
The idea is to give fans a chance to experience new perspectives and untold stories from Pandora. From side characters to historical lore, the anthology will explore narratives that were never shown on screen in the main films.

Cameron referenced The Animatrix, the 2003 animated spin-off from The Matrix, as inspiration.
“It’s a great example for how we can add texture and detail to the world of Avatar,” he noted.
Stories from the Shadows of Pandora
While the animated series hasn’t moved into production yet, Cameron is actively gathering ideas and searching for a team of “boutique filmmakers” and animators to bring the project to life.
“Backstory on characters and tangential stuff that happened off-camera within the movies… Who first landed on Pandora? The first expedition. You could go anywhere you want,” Cameron explained.
This fresh approach promises to offer fans a more layered understanding of the rich, alien world he introduced in 2009.
The Future of the Avatar Franchise
As development begins on the anthology series, the theatrical saga continues to unfold. The third Avatar film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is scheduled for release on December 19, 2025. This marks the third installment in Cameron’s ambitious five-film arc, produced by Disney and 20th Century Studios.
Whether it streams on Disney+ or debuts in theaters, the new animated series aims to expand the Avatar mythology in imaginative, unexpected ways. For longtime fans and newcomers alike, the evolving world of Avatar is set to become even more immersive—one story at a time.
