Joe Alwyn, known for his understated charm and compelling roles, recently shared a hilarious childhood memory that took a dramatic turn during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show on Friday, January 17th. The Conversations with Friends actor revealed how a prank he played with his brother ended with police officers knocking at their door.
The 33-year-old actor was asked about the funniest thing someone had ever yelled at him, prompting him to recount the mischievous incident.
“When I was about 8 years old, I thought it would be fun to prank the neighbors,” Alwyn explained. “I wrote some letters that were supposed to be funny but ended up being threatening-pranky. To add to the drama, I dipped them in fake blood I got from a toy store.”
Alwyn and his brother ran around their neighborhood, slipping the ominous notes into mailboxes. At the time, the young pranksters felt their mission was a success. “Prank done, achieved! Great!” Alwyn remembered thinking.
However, the neighbors didn’t see the humor in the situation. Alarmed by the fake-blood-covered letters, the street erupted into panic, with people crying and screaming. “The neighborhood was in chaos, understandably,” Alwyn said. “They called the police, and soon Scotland Yard was on its way. Police cars turned up because they thought there was a killer to catch!”
The situation escalated quickly, and Alwyn found himself facing three police officers in his home. “At that point, I was convinced I was going to jail,” he admitted. “We had to confess to what we did, and because my brother is 18 months older, he took most of the blame. But the officers weren’t happy with either of us. I don’t even remember what they yelled—it was just terrifying.”
A Quiet Star Reflects on the Past
Alwyn, who typically keeps his personal life out of the spotlight, has been in the news recently for his professional projects. He is currently promoting his new movie, Brutalist, while maintaining a focus on work following his high-profile breakup with Taylor Swift after six years together.
Reflecting on the prank, Alwyn laughed at the memory but acknowledged the chaos it caused. “It was definitely a lesson learned, even if it’s funny now,” he said.
Joe Alwyn’s story is a reminder that even serious actors have their fair share of playful—and sometimes outrageous—childhood moments.
