John Carpenter, the accomplished American actor, director, and composer, recently expressed his amazement at the immense success of Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar Barbie movie in the summer of 2023. He emphasized that he had no prior connection to the world of Barbie dolls or their cultural significance.
In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Carpenter revealed that he has adopted a habit of watching all his movies from the comfort of his home, no longer feeling the need to make the trip to a traditional cinema.
Carpenter’s comments came as a surprise, considering he is renowned for his contributions to the horror genre, notably directing classics like Halloween. He admitted that the Barbie movie’s themes and context were somewhat foreign to him, given his generational gap with the subject matter.
Nonetheless, Carpenter praised the film’s leading lady, Margot Robbie, lauding her performance as nothing short of fabulous.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie made history by becoming the highest-grossing film ever directed by a woman. The movie boasts an ensemble cast featuring popular actors such as Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Will Ferrell, Ariana Greenblatt, and Kingsley Ben-Adir. Together, they propelled the film to an impressive global box office revenue of $1.4 billion, further solidifying its status as the most successful Warner Bros. production ever in North America.
