Kate Winslet is sharing an emotional reflection on the bullying she faced from the press following the global success of Titanic. In a recent interview with 60 Minutes, the Oscar-winning actress recalled the painful moments when the media targeted her for her weight, leaving a lasting impact on her.
During the interview, a throwback clip was shown in which a host commented on Winslet’s appearance at the awards season during Titanic’s release. The host suggested she appeared “a little melted and poured into” a dress and mentioned that if she “needed two sizes larger, she’d be okay.”
Winslet, clearly upset, responded strongly to the comment. “It’s absolutely appalling,” she said, expressing her disgust over the body-shaming she experienced at such a young age. “What kind of person must they be to do something like that to a young actress who’s just trying to figure it out?” she added, reflecting on the harshness of the media’s treatment.
When asked if she ever confronted the press, the 49-year-old actress revealed that she did stand up for herself. “I did get face to face. I let them have it. I said, ‘I hope this haunts you,'” she shared, explaining how she directly challenged those who criticized her.
As the conversation continued, Winslet became emotional, acknowledging the significance of that moment. “It was a great moment,” she said. “It was a great moment because it wasn’t just for me. It was for all those people who were subjected to that level of harassment.”
Reflecting on the widespread impact of body-shaming, Winslet concluded, “It was horrific. It was really bad.” The actress’s candidness sheds light on the ongoing struggles many face with body image and the often brutal treatment from the media, especially for women in the public eye. Her powerful words not only show her own resilience but also her commitment to standing up for those who endure similar harassment.
