In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Kelly Clarkson, the renowned singer and host of The Kelly Clarkson Show, shared the heartfelt reasons behind her decision to relocate to New York City. The Grammy-winning artist revealed that her move was fueled by a sense of unhappiness in Los Angeles, where she had been residing for several years.
“I was very unhappy in L.A. and had been for several years. I needed a fresh start,” Clarkson candidly admitted, shedding light on the emotional turmoil she had been experiencing. She emphasized the importance of prioritizing her mental health and that of her children, recounting how she conveyed this to NBC, saying, “I’m not trying to sound ungrateful; I just can’t stay here anymore for my mental health; for me and my kids. They weren’t doing well either.”
Clarkson opened up about the toll her situation took on her, stating, “I’d just been showing up and smiling and doing what I’m supposed to do. But you can only compartmentalize so long until you break.”
The American Idol alum shared that the move to New York City has proven to be the right choice for her family. Reflecting on her 7-year-old son Remington’s positive response to his new school, she said, “[Remington] walked out of the school here and was like, ‘This is where I should be.’ So, it’s amazing that work is going well, but as a mom, that’s a win for your kid.”
With a sense of relief and optimism, Clarkson discussed the positive changes in her life, particularly in the context of her show. “Season 5 is my first season to actually enjoy every minute of it,” she revealed, highlighting the newfound joy and stability in her professional and personal life.
Living in New York City with her children, Clarkson shared glimpses of her daily life, describing activities like walking the dogs in the park, indulging in ice cream outings, making slime, and visiting museums. She highlighted the unique charm of New York, stating, “A typical day here is not typical. It’s just full in the most beautiful ways.”
As Kelly Clarkson continues to embrace her fresh start in the bustling city, her journey becomes an inspiring tale of resilience, prioritizing mental health, and finding joy in life’s simple pleasures.
