Matt Smith, known for his role as Daemon Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon, recently shared insights about the unique challenges of portraying a character from one of the most iconic families in the Game of Thrones universe. During a panel at New York Comic Con on October 20, alongside co-stars Tom Glynn-Carney and Fabien Frankel, Smith opened up about the complexities involved in bringing Daemon to life.
One of the most significant challenges, according to Smith, is managing the elaborate wigs that are essential to the Targaryen look. “The wigs are hard,” he confessed, echoing Glynn-Carney’s sentiments about the difficulty of working with the wigs, bald caps, and various pins necessary for their signature platinum hairstyles.
In a light-hearted revelation, Smith disclosed that he has been exploring alternative methods for achieving his character’s look while filming a new project titled Caught Stealing. Working with makeup artists on that set, he learned there might be easier solutions than the traditional wigs used on House of the Dragon. “I’ve been asking, ‘Is there a way around it?’ And they’re like, ‘There is,’” he shared, hinting at potential new techniques he plans to incorporate.
Both Glynn-Carney and Frankel were intrigued by Smith’s findings, with Smith joking about returning to House of the Dragon equipped with this newfound knowledge. Frankel, who portrays Ser Criston Cole, added a playful note, pointing out that Smith’s current nearly bald look for Caught Stealing might inspire him to shave his head for the role.
As the conversation shifted to the future of the show, Smith admitted he has not heard any updates regarding the much-anticipated third season after the dramatic season 2 finale aired on August 4. Glynn-Carney echoed this, quipping about the prolonged wait for new scripts. However, Frankel teased that he had heard some exciting developments he couldn’t reveal, keeping fans eager for more information.
As fans await the next chapter in the Targaryen saga, the first two seasons of House of the Dragon are currently available for streaming on Max, allowing viewers to catch up on the intrigue and drama that has captivated audiences worldwide.
