Michael Cera Reflects on “Excruciating Pain” Caused by Rihanna’s Slap in 2013 Film

Actor Michael Cera recently shared candid insights into a memorable and unexpected on-screen moment that took place during the filming of the 2013 comedy “This Is the End.” The 35-year-old star, known for his roles in various comedic projects, including “Superbad” and “Arrested Development,” found himself on the receiving end of a real slap from none other than Rihanna during a scene in the film.

In “This Is the End,” Cera portrays a fictionalized version of himself attending a housewarming party in Los Angeles. During the event, his character playfully smacks Rihanna on the behind, triggering an unanticipated reaction from the pop icon. Rihanna swiftly retaliates with a real slap, leading to a humorous and memorable moment on screen.

In a recent interview with GQ, Michael Cera discussed the now-infamous scene, confirming that the slap from Rihanna was genuinely executed. The actor revealed his preference for a more convincing and comedic result, stating, “She definitely hit me. But I wanted that. I think it’s a lot funnier and a lot more convincing. A fake slap just doesn’t look good, so she hit me hard.”

Cera humorously acknowledged the impact of the slap, joking, “Yeah, she really sent me flying, and it was great. And now it’s on film forever, this pain that I experienced.”

In a separate interview with Rolling Stone earlier in the year, Cera elaborated on the dynamics of the scene. He shared that he believed the authenticity of the moment would be heightened if Rihanna genuinely struck him. According to Cera, convincing Rihanna to deliver the slap didn’t require much effort on his part, as she was receptive to the idea.

“I believed it would have a more impactful visual if she actually struck me. She didn’t need a lot of persuasion to go along with it,” Cera disclosed. He further stated, “I certainly didn’t have any regrets! I found it engaging.”

Cera’s candid recounting of the scene showcases the commitment of actors to create compelling and believable moments on screen. Even enduring a real slap from Rihanna was a part of his dedication to delivering an impactful comedic scene that remains etched in film history.
