Miley Cyrus is setting the record straight on the viral speculation surrounding her Flowers music video and its supposed connection to actress Jennifer Lawrence. The pop star recently responded to fan theories claiming her gold gown in the video was a subtle nod to Lawrence and her rumored past with Cyrus’ ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth.
In a video shared on social media, a fan asked the singer directly, “Miley, was your Flowers dress a reference to Jennifer Lawrence?” Miley promptly replied, “No, but I love that dress of hers,” referring to Lawrence’s memorable red carpet moment in a similar gold gown.
The footage was reportedly captured during Miley’s appearance on the set of Jimmy Kimmel Live on May 22, adding clarity to the timing of her candid response.
Speculation about a hidden message in Flowers dates back to the song’s release, with fans dissecting visuals and lyrics for hints about Cyrus’ past relationship with Hemsworth. One of the most persistent rumors involved a potential reference to Lawrence, who co-starred with Hemsworth in The Hunger Games franchise.
Back in June 2023, Lawrence addressed the controversy during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen. When asked about the alleged fling with Hemsworth and its supposed inspiration for Flowers, the Oscar winner firmly denied the claims.
“Not true. Not true, total rumor,” Lawrence stated. “We all know Liam and I, like, kissed one time… It was years after they broke up. So, I just assume [the music video] was a coincidence.”
Miley and Liam had a decade-long on-and-off relationship before getting married in December 2018. The marriage ended less than a year later in an amicable split. Since then, Liam has been in a long-term relationship with model Gabriella Brooks, while Miley is currently dating drummer Maxx Morando.
By clearing the air, Miley has not only put an end to the Jennifer Lawrence speculation but also reminded fans that sometimes, a fashion choice is just that — a fashion choice.
