In a bizarre turn of events, the intense horror atmosphere of “Saw X” proved so convincing that it prompted concerned neighbors to call the police during an editing session. Director Kevin Greutert shared this unusual incident in an interview with NME, shedding light on the spine-chilling world of sound design that led to a surprising visit from the Los Angeles police.
During the film’s post-production phase, Steven Forn, the first assistant editor of “Saw X,” was tasked with completing the sound design for a particularly gruesome scene known as the “eye vacuum trap.” This painstaking work took place at Forn’s North Hollywood office and resulted in sounds so horrifying that it triggered a police intervention.
The Unsettling Knock on the Door:
Greutert recalled the startling encounter, stating that there was a sudden knock at the door of Forn’s workspace. The doorbell camera captured the moment when the Los Angeles police approached, responding to calls from concerned neighbors who believed someone was in distress.
When Forn answered the door, he calmly explained the situation to the officers, saying that he was working on a movie. He even offered to show them the footage if they were interested. The police officers, initially responding to a potential emergency, burst into laughter upon realizing it was all part of a movie production.
A Director’s Amusement:
Greutert found humor in the situation, remarking, “It’s a pretty funny story… Plus, Steve is such a mild-mannered guy. I can only imagine the look on his face when he realized what was happening!” The incident added an unexpected twist to the filmmaking process.
Despite the eerie episode, “Saw X” has made a strong impact since its release, receiving rave reviews and claiming the top spot within the iconic horror franchise that first emerged in 2004.
The unintentional involvement of the police in response to the terrifying screams from “Saw X” serves as a testament to the film’s ability to immerse viewers in its unsettling world. While the incident may have startled neighbors, it has only added to the film’s intrigue and success in the realm of horror cinema.
