Pistorius, 37, received a 13-year and five-month prison sentence in 2016 after fatally shooting Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day in 2013. The double-amputee, known as the “Blade Runner,” claimed he mistook her for a burglar during his trial. Despite the previous denial of early release in March, a mistake by South Africa’s Constitutional Court led to a reconsideration, resulting in the upcoming parole release.
According to the Department of Correctional Services, Pistorius will be released on January 5, 2024, and will be closely monitored by authorities until the completion of his sentence. While Steenkamp’s family does not oppose Pistorius’ early release, concerns have been expressed about his unresolved “huge anger issues.” June Steenkamp, Reeva’s mother, submitted a letter to the parole board questioning whether Pistorius has adequately addressed these issues during his incarceration. She also voiced potential apprehension for the safety of any woman coming into contact with Pistorius.
