Penn Badgley is opening up about his past relationship with Blake Lively just as the Gossip Girl alum finds herself in the spotlight again—this time due to a legal battle with It Ends With Us co-star and director Justin Baldoni.
The former couple dated from 2007 to 2010 during the height of their fame on Gossip Girl. While their romance ended years ago, Badgley recently shared how it played a vital role in keeping him stable during his early days in Hollywood.
In a candid interview with Variety, the You actor revealed that his relationship with Lively helped him avoid the pitfalls of fame. “I never struggled with substance,” Badgley said. “Blake didn’t drink. And I think our relationship, in some ways, saved me from forcing myself to go down that road.”
He further reflected on the darker side of fame, saying, “Like anyone who experiences some degree of fame and wealth, I was presented with the universal truth that not only does it not make your life better or easier—it can actually complicate things and make you quite unhappy.”
As Badgley prepares to return to the screen in the final season of You, premiering April 24, Lively is dealing with serious allegations involving Baldoni. The 37-year-old actress has reportedly filed a complaint accusing Baldoni of sexual harassment and orchestrating a smear campaign.
