Pete Davidson’s long-standing dream of making a mark on the big screen is finally becoming a reality. The comedian and actor, 31, has taken on the role of Petey the cat in the upcoming film adaptation of Dav Pilkey’s beloved Dog Man book series.
Speaking with CBS on Sunday, January 26, Davidson expressed his excitement about the character, describing it as a standout opportunity in his career.
“It’s a really fun, loud, layered character,” Davidson said. “I don’t get a lot of opportunities to stretch like that.”
The Saturday Night Live alum also reflected on how meaningful this role is, especially after stepping back from the public eye in June 2024 to focus on his mental health.
“It’s the best arc I’ve ever been given,” Davidson shared. “Usually, I’m in a movie for, like, nine minutes, and then shot in the face, so it was nice to have a full arc.” This comment referenced his brief role as Blackguard in The Suicide Squad, where his character met an untimely end early in the film.
Davidson also revealed a personal connection to Pilkey’s work, reminiscing about reading the Captain Underpants series as a child, thanks to his mom. Now, he’s thrilled to be part of a project that resonates with the younger generation in his family, who adore the Dog Man books.
“It’s really cool to be part of something that my nieces and nephews are obsessed with,” he said, emphasizing how the role came at the perfect time.
