Photographer Reveals Rare Unpublished ‘Friends’ Photo, Featuring Matthew Perry, From Iconic 1995 Shoot

In 1995, renowned photographer George Lange had an extraordinary assignment for Entertainment Weekly’s Fall TV preview issue. His mission was to capture the essence of some of the most popular television shows of the time, including “Friends,” the hit sitcom that was taking the world by storm. Lange’s vivid recollection of that memorable Friends photoshoot sheds light on the unique bond between the cast members and offers a glimpse into his perspective as a photographer.

Lange’s assignment required him to create conceptual photoshoots for TV shows like “Seinfeld,” “Frasier,” and “ER,” in addition to “Friends.” The challenge was to encapsulate the spirit of these shows within a single image. For the “Friends” shoot, Lange constructed a striking backdrop—a large wall adorned with five geometric shapes meant to showcase the cast, including the iconic Matthew Perry.

What followed was a day of chaos and excitement. In a Hollywood studio, Lange found himself surrounded not only by the cast but also by publicists, TV executives, network representatives, and even paparazzi outside the studio. The unexpected crowd within the studio presented a challenge: how to capture the cast’s essence in the midst of the mayhem.

The result was a remarkable image of the “Friends” cast holding each other, highlighting their profound connection both as characters on the show and as friends in real life.

Lange’s memories of this iconic photoshoot resurfaced following the tragic news of Matthew Perry’s passing at the age of 54. Lange’s son, Jackson, came across the news on TikTok and reached out to his father. The photographer revisited the images from the 1995 shoot, revealing a previously unpublished photograph of Perry and Jennifer Aniston. This photograph captured a candid moment between the two actors inside a circle attached to the wall, further showcasing their natural chemistry.

George Lange, as a photographer, emphasizes his approach of allowing his subjects to be themselves during a shoot, capturing their authenticity rather than directing every movement. He believes that the genuine bond between the “Friends” cast members was evident both on and off the screen.

The photographer’s reflections serve as a poignant reminder of life’s unpredictability and the importance of appreciating the connections and moments that surround us. Lange encourages us all to treasure the goodness that exists in our lives and the relationships we hold dear.
