Prince William reportedly left royal aides concerned over his lack of direction during a pivotal period in his life, according to a new royal biography.
In William and Catherine: The Monarchy’s New Era: The Inside Story, author Russell Myers sheds light on what he describes as a frustrating phase for palace staff during William’s so-called “transitional year” in 2013.
A ‘Transitional Year’ That Raised Eyebrows
The Prince of Wales stepped back from full-time royal duties after leaving his role as an RAF search and rescue pilot, with the move officially framed as a period of transition.

At the time, palace aides suggested that William would use the year to reflect on his future path—but insiders claim the lack of clear direction quickly became a concern.
“Courtiers dressed the announcement up as William entering a ‘transitional year,’” Myers wrote, noting that there was no clear indication he would increase his royal workload.
Frustration Builds Behind Palace Doors
Behind the scenes, however, the situation reportedly caused unease among senior aides.
According to the book, staff members worried that William risked being perceived as disengaged—especially as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip continued carrying out duties well into their later years.
Sources claim aides gently encouraged William to take on more responsibilities, but were often met with resistance.
“We would ask him to consider more engagements, but he would immediately push back,” a former aide reportedly said.
Concerns Over Long-Term Strategy
One of the biggest concerns highlighted in the book was the absence of a clear long-term plan.
“There was an intense worry… that he had no strategy for his future and was continually putting off decisions,” the insider revealed.

The situation reportedly became more visible when annual records of royal engagements were published—comparisons that some aides found “embarrassing.”
A Defining Period in Prince William’s Journey
While the claims offer insight into a challenging phase, they also highlight a transitional moment in Prince William’s evolution as a senior royal.
Since then, the Prince of Wales has taken on a more prominent role within the monarchy, particularly as the future king.
The revelations, however, provide a rare glimpse into the internal pressures and expectations faced by members of the royal family during key turning points in their lives.
