Selena Gomez, the multi-talented star, exuded excitement as she accepted the 2023 Billboard Music Award for Best Afrobeats Song on Sunday. Although unable to attend the event in person, the 31-year-old actress and singer pre-recorded a heartfelt message for her win alongside Nigerian rapper Rema, recognizing their collaboration on the song “Calm Down.”
Dressed in a vibrant and crocheted Oscar de la Renta floral dress, Gomez expressed her gratitude to Billboard at the beginning of her acceptance speech. She credited Rema for the success of “Calm Down,” saying, “This is honestly Rema’s doing. He chose me to be a part of such an incredible song. So, I want to thank him and thank all of you for streaming and listening, and I wish we could be there. But thank you!”
“Calm Down” not only clinched the Best Afrobeats Song award but also earned nominations in four other categories at the awards show. The event featured a “reimagined” format, presenting performances and award celebrations in diverse locations around the world.
Gomez’s win comes on the heels of her recent public appearances, including socializing with longtime friend Taylor Swift and embarking on the South American leg of her “Eras Tour.” Earlier in the month, she enjoyed a Girls’ Night Out in the company of Gigi Hadid, Sophie Turner, and Brittany Mahomes.
The Girls’ Night Out coincided with Gomez’s growing friendship with Mahomes, adding an extra layer of social intrigue to the spotlight on her blossoming romance with Travis Kelce. Selena Gomez’s Billboard Music Award win marks another milestone in her versatile career, showcasing her continued impact in both the music and entertainment realms.
