Selena Gomez opened up about her personal growth and the lessons learned from her past relationships in a candid interview with her fiancé, Benny Blanco. The couple appeared together on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, released on March 24, giving fans a deeper glimpse into their connection just days after the release of their collaborative album I Said I Love You First.
During the interview, Gomez, 32, and Blanco, 37, discussed various aspects of their relationship, including how they handle conflict and disagreements. Gomez acknowledged that in past relationships, she had been reactive and realized she needed to change this approach before she could fully commit to someone.
“I’ve been guilty of starting things off that way,” Gomez shared, referring to her tendency to react emotionally. “I think that’s why I was alone for five years—I needed time to collect myself.”
Looking back, Gomez believes her time apart from relationships was essential in preparing her for her current connection with Blanco. “I’ve said to him before that 10 years ago, it’s not that I didn’t want to be with you, it’s just that I wouldn’t have been in the right headspace,” she explained. “I don’t think you deserved the baggage I was carrying at the time.”

Reflecting on her past, Gomez revealed that while the journey wasn’t always easy, it taught her valuable lessons. “I’ve learned a lot of lessons and made mistakes along the way, and I just want this relationship to be right,” she confessed. “That was something I needed to learn.”
The couple also discussed the dynamics of disagreements, with Gomez noting that stubbornness is not limited to one gender. “Girls can equally want to be right,” she shared. “For me, it was really tough in the past, but he makes it so much easier now. If I get frustrated, he’s quick to understand.”
Blanco’s patience has played a significant role in helping Gomez shift her mindset, allowing her to grow in the relationship. Since going public with their relationship in December 2023, their bond has only strengthened, culminating in an engagement a year later. Blanco surprised Gomez with a stunning marquise diamond, sealing their commitment to each other.
As Gomez continues to evolve personally and professionally, it’s clear that her relationship with Blanco is thriving, with both partners learning from the past and working towards a stronger future together.
