Shakira, the globally acclaimed Colombian singer, appears to have taken a subtle jab at her ex-boyfriend, Gerard Pique, through her music.
The 45-year-old songstress had previously released a diss track aimed at her former beau and his new girlfriend, Clara Chia Marti. Now, she has made another powerful statement by revealing the title of her latest track: “The Boss.”
It’s worth noting that “The Boss” was a playful nickname bestowed upon Shakira by friends of her ex-footballer boyfriend, Gerard Pique. These friends humorously dubbed her “La Patron,” meaning “The Boss,” as they playfully noted her absence from their gatherings during her relationship with Pique.
Shakira further alluded to her feelings about Gerard during her recent performance at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA). She took the stage to perform her song titled “Shakira Bzrp Music Sessions 53,” in which she included lyrics that subtly addressed her former relationship.
Some of the lyrics from the song included lines like, “A lot of gyms. But work your brain a little bit too,” and “I’m worth two 22’s. You traded a Ferrari for a Twingo. You traded a Rolex for a Casio.”
Shakira’s performance at the VMA earned her a standing ovation from an impressed crowd, marking her subtle but impactful response to her past relationship with Gerard Pique.
