In a candid revelation, Jesse Armstrong, the mastermind behind HBO’s critically acclaimed series “Succession,” has disclosed that the genesis of the show’s script was rooted in the legacy of media mogul Rupert Murdoch. Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Armstrong unveiled that the initial iteration of the script revolved around the real-life dynamics of Murdoch and his family.
“Succession,” a gripping drama chronicling the power struggles within a media empire and among its heirs, has prompted speculation about its connection to the life of Rupert Murdoch, who commands News Corp and the Fox Corporation.
Armstrong provided insight into the inception of the series, indicating, “I wrote a script about Rupert Murdoch and his family – the real people, which was the predecessor.” What commenced as a docu-drama project at Channel 4 eventually morphed into the screenplay of “Succession.”
Although Armstrong initially anticipated a single-season trajectory for the concept, the show achieved resounding success. Over the course of four seasons, “Succession” captivated audiences and garnered recognition through prestigious awards, including an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series in the preceding year.
Addressing a report from Vanity Fair, which suggested that Rupert Murdoch’s former spouse, Jerry Hall, was prohibited from engaging with the show’s producers during their divorce proceedings, Armstrong expressed a degree of skepticism. He postulated that contractual obligations stemming from the divorce might have constrained Hall’s interactions with various media entities.
Highlighting one of Murdoch’s defining characteristics – his ability to dismiss unfounded rumors – Armstrong ventured that any restrictions placed on Hall likely resulted from her divorce settlement rather than a direct mandate from Murdoch himself. Armstrong emphasized that Murdoch’s inclination to disregard baseless claims led him to believe that Hall’s limitations were not directly imposed by Murdoch.
The revelation of Murdoch’s influence as a catalyst for “Succession” adds another layer of intrigue to the show’s narrative, shedding light on the complexities of media dynasties and their inherent power dynamics.
