Netflix has officially announced the renewal of its hit political drama “The Diplomat” for a second season. The show, which premiered on the platform on April 20, quickly rose to number one and generated 57.48 million view hours during its first weekend.
Jinny Howe, VP of Netflix Drama, credited the cliffhanger ending of the first season as a key factor in the show’s return. She praised Keri Russell’s performance as Kate Wyler and said that fans around the world were loving the gripping and propulsive drama.
“After that jaw-dropping cliffhanger, we can’t wait for them to see what the amazing visionary team of Debora Cahn, Janice Williams, and Keri Russell have in store for Season 2,” Howe said.
Creator and showrunner EP Debora Cahn also expressed her excitement about the renewal. “We had such a great time making ‘The Diplomat,’ and it’s a thrill to see how much people are enjoying it. We’re so glad we get to do it again!” she said.
“The Diplomat” is a political thriller that follows the career diplomat Kate Wyler, who becomes the US Ambassador to the United Kingdom amid an international crisis while also dealing with her tumultuous personal life. The show’s second season is set to release in 2024.
