Fans of the critically acclaimed sci-fi anthology series, Black Mirror, have a reason to rejoice as Netflix has announced that the show will return in June with its sixth season. However, creator Charlie Brooker has hinted that this season will not be what fans have come to expect from the show’s usual formula.
In an official statement to Netflix’s news site Tudum, Brooker said that he deliberately upended some of his core assumptions about what to expect from the series in the new season. He added that while some of the more familiar Black Mirror tropes would be present, the new season would also have a few new elements that would stretch the parameters of what ‘a Black Mirror episode’ even is. Brooker believes that the series should be a series that can’t be easily defined and can keep reinventing itself, and that it should feature stories that are entirely distinct from one another.
This season, viewers can expect “some crazy swings and more variety than ever before,” he said.
Black Mirror has been widely acclaimed for its dark, twisty narratives about dystopias and the social questions they ask. Brooker’s take on technology’s impact on society has often been compared to the works of Philip K. Dick and George Orwell. By its midpoint, the show’s schtick was succinctly defined by Daniel Lavery as “what if phones, but too much.”
The series has always boasted of an impressive cast, and this season is no different. The cast for season 6 includes Aaron Paul, Anjana Vasan, Annie Murphy, Auden Thornton, Ben Barnes, Clara Rugaard, Daniel Portman, Danny Ramirez, Himesh Patel, John Hannah, Josh Hartnett, Kate Mara, Michael Cera, Monica Dolan, Myha’la Herrold, Paapa Essiedu, Rob Delaney, Rory Culkin, Salma Hayek Pinault, Samuel Blenkin, and Zazie Beetz.
They will be tasked with bringing in the horrific implications of Black Mirror’s speculative fiction, and Brooker is excited for audiences to see what the show has in store for them. “I can’t wait for people to binge their way through it all and hope they enjoy it, especially the bits they shouldn’t,” he told Tudum.
Black Mirror season 6 is set to premiere in June on Netflix, and fans can’t wait to see what Brooker has in store for them.
