Timothée Chalamet Explains Why He Turned Down Playing Bob Dylan in Biopic

Timothée Chalamet recently opened up about his decision to step away from the role of legendary musician Bob Dylan in an upcoming biopic. In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, Chalamet shared his initial excitement and later realizations that led him to decline the role, which was later taken on by his Dune co-star, Austin Butler.

The actor, who is currently dating Kylie Jenner, initially hoped to bring a deep, detailed performance to the character, similar to Natalie Portman’s portrayal of Jackie Kennedy in Jackie. “Natalie Portman does a sequence in Jackie that’s step-for-step exactly what Jackie did,” Chalamet explained. Inspired by her dedication, he intended to apply a similar approach to portraying Dylan, meticulously mirroring the artist’s movements, mannerisms, and style.

However, as Chalamet began preparing for the role, including working with vocal and movement coaches, he started to see the limitations of this approach. The coaching process made him realize that Dylan’s iconic presence couldn’t simply be imitated. “I thought, ‘Wait, I don’t need to copy this—it’s not me,’” Chalamet shared, understanding that his strengths lay outside of strict mimicry.

Reflecting on Dylan’s unique persona, Chalamet noted, “Bob didn’t have a vocal coach. He had two bottles of red wine and four packs of cigarettes. There’s no way to impersonate that.” This raw, unfiltered authenticity of Dylan’s character ultimately led Chalamet to reconsider the role, feeling that his acting style couldn’t do justice to the essence of the music legend.

With Austin Butler now set to play Dylan, Chalamet’s decision to pass on the role highlights his commitment to staying true to himself and recognizing his own limitations—a candid insight that has only deepened fans’ appreciation of the actor’s thoughtful approach to his craft.
