Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has recently shared surprising insights into the casting process for the iconic role of Edward, revealing that the studio initially had reservations about casting Robert Pattinson in the hit movie.
Speaking on the Watchalong podcast, Catherine disclosed that the studio expressed concerns about Robert’s appearance during the initial casting stages. She recounted a pivotal moment when Robert visited her house with black bangs and a somewhat out-of-shape physique due to frequent pub visits.
“I thought ‘it works not just in person, but it works on screen.’ I had to be sure. Of course, in person, I just got carried away, but you have to be sure — does it really translate [to the screen]?” Catherine explained.
After conducting auditions with co-star Kristen Stewart for the 2008 movie, Catherine sent the footage to Summit Entertainment, who were unsure about the casting choice. She assured them that a makeover, including changes to Robert’s hair and a fitness regimen, would transform him into a captivating Edward.
“I said, ‘Yeah, I do. Did you see his cheekbones? We’re doing a makeover on the hair and everything, and he’s going to start working out, and he’s going to be gorgeous.’ But they didn’t believe it at first. He walked over there with a stained shirt… It was Rob,” she added.
Catherine also revealed the four finalists for the role of Edward were Robert Pattinson, Ben Barnes, Shiloh Fernandez, and Jackson Rathbone. The behind-the-scenes revelation adds an intriguing layer to the casting process of one of the most beloved vampire characters in cinematic history.
