It: Welcome to Derry Creators Reveal Why Pennywise Was Hidden Until the Last Minute

Fans of Stephen King’s It universe have finally received an answer to one of the biggest questions surrounding the highly anticipated prequel series Welcome to Derry. Since the release of its first official teaser, viewers have been eagerly waiting to see Bill Skarsgård’s return as the terrifying clown, Pennywise. However, the makers kept audiences in suspense — only revealing the sinister figure just days before the show’s premiere on October 26.

Now, showrunner Brad Caleb Kane has opened up about the reasoning behind this creative decision. Speaking about the approach, Kane explained,

“The benefit of long-form storytelling is that we can spend a little bit more time on the other forms that Pennywise can take to scare the characters, and you can delve more deeply into the characters.”

This approach allows the series to explore the psychological and emotional dimensions of fear, rather than relying solely on Pennywise’s chilling presence.

Producers Andy and Barbara Muschietti, who were also behind the successful It films, echoed this sentiment in a conversation with Screen Rant. Andy emphasized the importance of keeping the character unpredictable, saying,

“It’s been very important, from the first movie, to treat him as a very unpredictable character. In order to do that, you cannot have the audience get comfortable with him.”

Barbara further elaborated on the timing of Pennywise’s return, stressing that his appearance must feel meaningful and impactful:

“If you want to bring out Pennywise, you’ve got to bring him out with all his complexity in the right moments; otherwise It loses its power.”

She reassured fans that the fear factor remains intact, adding,

“He is still as terrifying as he is because of that dose-ification.”

With this calculated buildup, Welcome to Derry promises to deliver not just another horror story, but a deeper exploration of the dark mythology behind one of cinema’s most iconic villains. As October 26 draws near, fans can expect a haunting return to the eerie world of Derry — where Pennywise’s evil is only just beginning to unfold.
