Male Menopause: Understanding Male Hormonal Changes, Andropause and Testosterone Decline

As men age, they encounter hormonal shifts comparable to women’s menopause, often termed “andropause” or “male menopause,” characterized by a decline in testosterone levels. According to Mayo Clinic, testosterone levels can decrease by an average of 1% per year after the age of 40, with some men experiencing up to a 50% reduction by age 70 compared to peak levels.

Approximately three in 10 men in their 70s and 80s are estimated to suffer from low testosterone levels, leading to a spectrum of symptoms such as reduced libido, fatigue, mood swings, hot flashes, erectile dysfunction, infertility, and diminished muscle mass.

For men experiencing these symptoms, considering a blood test to assess testosterone levels is advisable, although it’s essential to note that these tests are not routinely conducted and may require a specific request from a healthcare provider.

While there is no cure for andropause, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) and lifestyle adjustments can aid men in replenishing their hormones. TRT can be administered through prescription injections, topical gels, oral medications, or patches applied to the skin. However, there has been a notable increase in therapy requests, driven in part by aggressive “direct-to-consumer marketing,” according to Dr. Michael O’Leary, a urologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Maintaining a balanced lifestyle with regular exercise, a nutritious diet, and quality sleep plays a crucial role in sustaining healthy testosterone levels. A study in Obesity Reviews suggests that weight loss can contribute to increased testosterone levels, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about andropause.

British TV presenter Israel Cassol, diagnosed with “male menopause” at 40, is actively working to enhance awareness and acknowledgment of this medical condition. Cassol expressed surprise, stating, “I never knew it could affect men just as much,” in a conversation with the Daily Mail. As awareness grows, men can navigate andropause with a better understanding of the available options for maintaining hormonal health.
