Shahid Afridi, former Pakistan all-rounder, has been announced as the latest ambassador for the highly anticipated ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, to be held in the West Indies and the USA.
Joining an esteemed lineup of ambassadors including Indian cricket icon Yuvraj Singh, the dynamic Chris Gayle, and the legendary sprinter Usain Bolt, Afridi brings his storied history to the tournament.
Afridi played a crucial role in Pakistan’s journey to the final of the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 and their victorious campaign in the 2009 edition.
Reflecting on his cherished memories of the tournament, Afridi expressed his excitement at being part of the upcoming edition as a tournament ambassador.
“The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup holds a special place in my heart,” Afridi remarked. “From being honored as the Player of the Tournament in the inaugural edition to lifting the trophy in 2009, some of the most memorable moments of my career stem from competing on this prestigious stage.”
He continued, highlighting the growth of T20 World Cups over the years: “T20 World Cups have evolved significantly, and I am thrilled to be involved in this edition, which promises more teams, more matches, and even greater drama than before.”
Expressing particular anticipation for the India versus Pakistan clash on 9 June, Afridi emphasized the significance of this historic rivalry and the fitting stage of New York for this highly anticipated encounter.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup commences on 1 June, with co-hosts USA facing Canada at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, setting the stage for a thrilling tournament.
