A new royal biography has sparked fresh controversy around King Charles III, accusing him of failing to act decisively on scandals involving both Prince Andrew and Prince Harry.
In Betrayal, author Tom Bower claims the monarch’s hesitation—described as “reticence”—damaged the reputation of the Crown and frustrated senior figures within the royal establishment.
Book Claims King Charles Failed to Act ‘in a Timely Manner’
According to Bower, King Charles struggled to take firm action against both his younger brother and his son during key moments of controversy.
The author alleges that pressure on the monarch intensified around the time of his coronation in May 2023, as criticism mounted over how royal scandals were being handled.
Bower writes that the King was seen as “dithering” instead of making clear, decisive moves to protect the monarchy’s image.
Coronation Fallout Sparked Public Backlash
The book highlights the aftermath of the Coronation of King Charles III, claiming that within 24 hours of the historic event, public sentiment had already shifted.
“Many Britons were appalled by the distasteful spectacle of Andrew and Harry’s behavior,” Bower states, suggesting that the controversy overshadowed what should have been a unifying moment for the nation.

The criticism, he adds, extended beyond the public, with senior establishment figures questioning why the King had not resolved ongoing issues tied to both princes.
‘Reticence’ Allegedly Weakened the Crown
One of the book’s strongest claims is that King Charles’ reluctance to act decisively may have harmed the monarchy’s long-term standing.
“Charles was criticised… for failing to resolve conclusively the embarrassments presented by Harry and Andrew,” an excerpt reads.
The author argues that this hesitation forced the King to confront concerns about his own popularity, as well as that of Queen Camilla, emphasizing that public opinion remains crucial to the monarchy’s survival.
Prince Harry’s Team Fires Back at Author
The book has already triggered a sharp response from Prince Harry’s camp.
In a statement released on March 14 through a spokesperson, the Duke’s team criticized Tom Bower directly, accusing him of crossing the line from commentary into obsession.

“Mr Bower’s commentary has long crossed the line from criticism into fixation,” the statement read.
It further condemned remarks attributed to the author, including claims about the monarchy needing to “obliterate the Sussexes,” calling his work filled with “deranged conspiracy and melodrama.”
Fresh Royal Tensions Emerge
The latest revelations add another layer of tension to ongoing royal dynamics, particularly as public scrutiny continues to follow both Prince Andrew’s controversies and Prince Harry’s strained relationship with the royal family.
While the claims in Betrayal remain contested, the book has reignited debate about leadership within the monarchy—and whether stronger action could have changed its current trajectory.
