Meghan Markle’s recent salsa dancing in Colombia has taken on added significance with the emergence of a throwback photo from her college years.
Ahead of her dance displays with Prince Harry during their Colombian visit, a nostalgic image surfaced showing Meghan from her time at Northwestern University. The photo, shared by Iris Amador on social media, depicts Meghan participating in a salsa class, dressed in a black turtleneck and jeans—a style she later echoed in a 2021 holiday card with her family.
Amador’s post highlighted Meghan’s salsa lessons from her university days, noting, “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visit Colombia, including Cali, the world capital of salsa—music and dance that Meghan Markle enjoys, with whom we shared salsa classes at university.” The post was translated into English, emphasizing Meghan’s salsa class with the future Duchess of Sussex.
Meghan, who graduated from Northwestern in 2003 with degrees in theater and international studies, appears to have maintained her love for dance. This historical context adds a personal touch to her recent public salsa performances.
During their four-day trip to Colombia, which began on August 15 at the invitation of Vice President Francia Márquez, Meghan and Harry engaged in various activities across Bogotá, Cartagena, and Cali. Their visit aimed to support their Archewell Foundation and promote causes such as military support and female empowerment.
On their first day in Bogotá, Meghan was seen enjoying a dance performance at the National Centre for the Arts. By August 18, the couple was dancing together in Cali, renowned as the salsa capital of the world. At the Jóvenes en Cali youth organization, they were photographed dancing and sharing a kiss, showcasing their affection and enjoyment of dance.
Vice President Márquez revealed that her decision to invite the couple was influenced by the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, which provided insight into their lives. The series made a significant impact on Márquez and contributed to the warm reception the couple received.
During their visit, Meghan also participated in a panel discussion on Afro-Colombian women and entrepreneurs, where she addressed the audience in Spanish—a skill she refined during an internship with the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires.
Meghan Markle’s salsa skills, honed from her college days, have been prominently displayed on this international stage, blending her personal interests with her public engagements.
