Prince William, 43, revealed he shares a reassuring message with his children—Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7—before they go to bed. The heir to the throne made the comments in a conversation with Christiane Amanpour of CNN during the Earthshot Prize Impact Assembly on November 5 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
A Message of Hope for the Next Generation
Speaking ahead of the Earthshot Prize awards ceremony, Prince William explained that he tells his children:
“You have to provide leadership and a vision that there’s good things to come… Knowing the planet’s going to be in a healthier, better state because of the brilliant people in this room is something that I love to tell them when they go to bed. It’s like, it’s going to be great. Your future is going to be as bright as futures gone by.”
The prince emphasized the importance of instilling optimism and environmental responsibility in the next generation.
Promoting Sustainable Habits at Home
Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton have long promoted environmentally mindful habits in their household. Previously, the Prince of Wales shared how the family practices recycling, minimizes water usage, and turns off lights when leaving rooms.
“Every family tries to do what they can to help with the environment,” he said during the 2024 Earthshot Prize Awards in South Africa.
Earthshot Prize Awards 2025
The Earthshot Prize, launched by Prince William in 2020, recognizes innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. The 2025 awards ceremony marks the fifth cycle of the contest and takes place at Rio’s Museum of Tomorrow.
Over 2,400 solutions were nominated this year, narrowed down to 15 finalists, with $1.3 million awarded to one winner in each of the five flagship categories:

- Clean Our Air
- Revive Our Oceans
- Build a Waste-Free World
- Fix Our Climate
The awards ceremony will feature performances from Kylie Minogue, Anitta, and Shawn Mendes, blending environmental advocacy with a touch of glitz and glamour.
