Prince William, a well-known Aston Villa fan, combined his love for football with climate action during his exciting first day in Brazil.
After receiving a special honour in Rio de Janeiro—being presented the keys to the city by Mayor Eduardo Paes atop Sugarloaf Mountain—William headed to the iconic Maracanã Stadium, one of football’s most legendary venues.
The future king shared the pitch with Brazilian football legend Marcos Evangelista de Morais, famously known as Cafu, and interacted with children while showing off his impressive footwork. Holding a cup of beverage in one hand, William easily manoeuvred the ball, scored a penalty, and celebrated with high-fives after a joyful match.
Kensington Palace highlighted the engagement as part of a global initiative launched by William’s Earthshot Prize: Generation Earthshot 2025. The program aims to unite 75 young changemakers from Brazil and beyond in a four-day leadership program focused on climate action.
“They’re building skills, exchanging ideas, and being inspired by sporting legends like Cafu – shaping the climate leaders of tomorrow,” the Palace said.
“It’s easy to feel optimistic with young people like these already stepping up for our planet!”
William’s visit underscores his dedication to environmental causes while embracing Brazil’s football culture, leaving a lasting impression on both young climate leaders and fans of the sport.
