Prince William has recently spearheaded a meaningful new project in Scotland through The Royal Foundation, focusing on supporting vulnerable communities using the power of football.
During his surprise visit to Leith Community Centre on May 21, the Prince of Wales, alongside his wife Kate Middleton’s charity, The Royal Foundation, announced an exciting partnership with Street Soccer Scotland. This charity uses football as a tool to help individuals facing homelessness, addiction, and mental health struggles.
As part of this collaboration, The Royal Foundation introduced a new local coalition called “Leith United.” The initiative aims to rejuvenate community spaces and encourage social connections for Edinburgh’s most vulnerable residents.
This effort falls under The Royal Foundation’s broader Community Impact Programme, which strives to create lasting positive changes in communities across the UK.
A passionate football supporter, Prince William met with Street Soccer Scotland’s founder David Duke, as well as local coaches and players who have overcome various social challenges. He also participated in a youth forum organized by YMCA Edinburgh, where young people voiced their aspirations for the community centre’s future.
Founded in Leith in 2009, Street Soccer Scotland has grown significantly and now operates throughout the country. By teaming up with local organizations, Prince William hopes that the “Leith United” model will serve as a blueprint for sustainable community support nationwide.
