FIFA Women’s World Cup: New Zealand Makes History as First Host Nation to Exit at Group Stage

New Zealand’s hopes of progressing in the Women’s World Cup on their home turf were shattered as they became the inaugural host nation to be eliminated at the group stage. Despite the enthusiastic backing from their passionate crowd at Dunedin Stadium, the Football Ferns struggled to find a breakthrough, resulting in a goalless draw against Switzerland on Sunday.

The co-hosts’ journey began on a high note with a stunning 1-0 upset against Norway in the opening match, marking their first-ever World Cup win. However, their jubilation was short-lived as they faced setbacks in the subsequent group matches. A surprising 1-0 defeat to the Philippines followed, and their struggle to make an impact against Switzerland sealed their fate.

In the other Group A game, Norway showcased a remarkable resurgence after their initial defeat. They secured a spot in the knockout rounds with a dominating 6-0 victory against the Philippines. Sophie Román Haug’s hattrick, along with goals from Caroline Graham Hansen, Guro Reiten, and an Alicia Barker own-goal, ensured Norway’s spot in the last 16.

Throughout the match against Switzerland, New Zealand found it challenging to gain control and create scoring opportunities. Despite their efforts in the closing stages, they managed only two shots on target. Even goalkeeper Victoria Esson joined the attack during corner kicks and free-kicks in a desperate attempt to secure a win, but it was not enough to alter the outcome.

As the final whistle blew, the New Zealand players gathered on the pitch, and captain Ali Riley delivered an emotional speech to her tearful teammates. The disappointment of being eliminated from the tournament on home soil was palpable.

For the Philippines, their historic World Cup journey came to an end, but they reflected on it with pride. Sarina Bolden, who scored the team’s first-ever World Cup goal in the victory against New Zealand, expressed gratitude for the experience and the tremendous support from Filipino fans. Their memorable World Cup debut garnered growing popularity and overwhelming support, demonstrated by the chants of ‘Filipinas’ resonating throughout Eden Park during the match against Norway.
