The Spanish FA (RFEF) said on Sunday, Olga Carmona, the captain and hero of the World Cup final of team Spain, found out after the final match that her father had died.
She scored a 29th-minute goal to secure a 1-0 victory over England and secure Spain their first Women’s World Cup title.
The RFEF sincerely regrets to inform the death of Olga Carmona’s father. Spain’s captain found out the tragic news after the final of the World Cup, the Spanish FA said on social media. We send our most heartfelt embrace to Olga and her family in a moment of serious grief, it added.
On Friday, a father of Carmona had been battling a long disease and died, an RFEF spokesperson told Reuters.
Carmona posted on X (formerly Twitter), “I know that you have provided me the power to accomplish something unique.”
The family of Carmona and her friends decided not to tell her so that she could concentrate on the most crucial match of her career, according to Spanish media outlet Relevo. Her brothers and mother traveled to New Zealand during the World Cup but then headed back to Spain.
