Nurse Liz Smith’s decision to adopt a prematurely born baby who had no visitors for five months is a heartwarming story that has touched the hearts of people around the world. This selfless act of kindness is a testament to the power of love and care in a child’s life.
The 40-year-old nurse at Franciscan Children’s Hospital in Brighton, Massachusetts, Liz Smith, had always wished to start a family. She had exhausted many avenues of conception, including sperm donation and an IVF procedure. However, nothing helped.
The baby, who was born prematurely, required specialized care and attention to ensure her survival. She first met Gisele, a baby at the time, in 2016. She had neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) because of her mother’s drug use during pregnancy, and she was born premature at 29 weeks. Gisele was just 1 lb. 14 oz (850g). No one else came to see the baby for the first five months besides Liz.
Nurse Smith had formed a strong bond with the child over the course of her stay in the hospital. Gisele’s biological parents had custody of her removed by the state, and Liz decided to begin caring for her. She knew that the baby deserved a loving home and a family who would care for her.
Gisele was officially adopted by her on October 18, 2018, and she was given the surname Smith.
