Paul Levesque, aka Triple H, announced this week on Monday Night Raw that the coveted championship will make its return after a decade in retirement. The title was unified with the WWE Championship back in 2013.
After months and months of rumors, the WWE has finally announced that it is splitting the top-tier men’s championship into two belts.
Addressing Roman Reigns’ current Undisputed WWE Universal Championship run, which is nearing 1,000 days, Levesque noted that Reigns has limited the frequency in which the title can be defended.
Paul explained that the company needs two top champions in the men’s division, and confirmed that the new World Heavyweight Champion will be crowned at the upcoming Night of Champions premium live event/PPV in Saudi Arabia on May 27.
Roman Reigns will nevertheless retain the title of Undisputed WWE Universal Champion and bring that belt to whichever brand he lands on at this year’s WWE Draft.
So technically the title isn’t being “split”, though, in practice with two top-tier titles, that’s exactly what this means.
The Undisputed WWE Universal Champion who is coming up on 1,000 days as champion. 1,000 days as champion. It is incredible, it is unheard of in the modern era.
Roman Reigns did something very smart, something I would’ve done, something any intelligent Superstar would have done.”
Paul “Triple H” Levesque said
Paul added that he negotiated himself into a position where he didn’t have to defend that championship as frequently. While I don’t blame Roman for that, and while that is great for Roman Reigns, it is not great for WWE, he added.
Unveiling the new belt, HHH added: On Saturday May 27, at Night of Champions, we will crown a new World Heavyweight Champion. This will be a champion you can be proud of. This will be a champion you can respect. That you can admire, Paul added.
Triple H said, This will be a champion that will defend this champion, anywhere, any place any time all over the World. This champion will not have to demand your acknowledgement. This champion will earn your acknowledgement and will earn the title of World Heavyweight Champion, Paul added.
Roman Reigns won the WWE Universal Championship by defeating previous champion “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman in a No Holds Barred Triple Threat match at Payback on August 30, 2020. He unified the titles by beating Brock Lesnar on WrestleMania 38 Night 2 in a Winner Takes All match.
