On Saturday, the African Union got its seat as a new member of the G20 after the invitation of the summit host and the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director and Chairman Kristalina Georgieva, and World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala were among the first participants to land in India.
Earlier on Friday, the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration of G20 is almost prepared and will be delivered before the grouping’s heads to ensure a consensus, India’s sherpa Amitabh Kant said.
Addressing a press conference ahead of the G20 Leaders’ Summit on September 9-10, Kant said he would disclose more about the declaration, also referred to as a joint communique, after it has been accepted by the G2- leaders. However, he said the declaration will include the voice of the global south and developing nations.
Earlier on Friday, Indian PM Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina had a bilateral talk in New Delhi. The two nations also signed three memorandum of understanding (MoUs), including one on collaboration in Digital Payment mechanisms.
Meanwhile, on Friday, United States President Joe Biden landed in the Indian capital Delhi to partake in the G20 Summit to be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. US President Biden, along with Janet Yellen, headed for a closed-door meeting with PM Modi on Friday, after the former reached India.
The Quad, comprising India, the US, Japan, and Australia, has been concentrating on practical collaboration to provide a free and open Indo-Pacific in the backdrop of China’s growing military muscle-flexing in the region.
The 18th G20 Summit is being scheduled at the state-of-the-art Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre in New Delhi on September 9-10.
