Biden will ask world leaders to stand with Ukraine at the UN General Assembly

On Tuesday, Joe Biden, the President of the United States, will use his speech to the UN General Assembly to make a full-throated appeal for the leader of the World to stick with Ukraine against Russian raiders- and he expects Republicans in Congress will take notice too.

Biden’s address at the annual meeting is the centerpiece event of his three-day visit to New York, which will include discussions with the heads of five Central Asian countries and the leaders of Brazil and Israel.

Biden has made rallying US partners to help Ukraine a leading component of US foreign policy, claiming the world must give a clear indication to Russian President Vladimir Putin that he will not be able to survive the West.

Biden said on Monday at an election campaign fundraiser in New York that we rallied the world to help Ukraine and united NATO because he was persuaded at the start that Putin was relying on NATO not being capable of standing together and that would be sufficient.

But Biden has encountered criticism from some Republicans who want the US to deliver less money there. Donald Trump, the former President of the US, has claimed he would seek a swift end to the war if he is elected again.

Kevin McCarthy, the House of Representatives Speaker, has asked whether the US should keep sending billions in weaponry to Kyiv.

In his speech, US officials said that Biden intends to claim that Russia’s February 2022 raid of Ukraine and occupation of the region is a breach of the founding UN Charter, a major principle of which is respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
