Derek Chauvin is “expected to survive” the recent prison stabbing attack he was involved in, authorities said. Earlier this week, Chauvin, — the former Minneapolis police officer who was convicted of murdering George Floyd — was stabbed in an Arizona prison.
Now, Minneapolis police chief Brian O’Hara and a spokesperson for state attorney general Keith Ellison’s office tell in statements that Chauvin is on the mend.
Citing his agency’s “federal law enforcement partners,” O’Hara said that Chauvin was “in stable condition.”
Brian Evans, an Ellison spokesperson, meanwhile, said the attorney general’s office “heard that [Chauvin] is expected to survive” as of Friday evening.
A source familiar with the incident previously told the AP on Friday that Chauvin was seriously injured after another inmate attacked him in the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona.
The prison is medium-security but has been low-staffed, causing a lack of security, according to the outlet.
The Bureau of Prisons (BOP) later confirmed an unnamed inmate at the Tucson facility was attacked around 12:30 p.m. on Friday.
“No employees were injured during the incident,” a statement from the BOP read. “Responding employees initiated life-saving measures for one incarcerated individual. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were requested while life-saving efforts continued.”
“The incarcerated individual was transported by EMS to a local hospital for further treatment and evaluation,” the statement concluded.
According to the BOP, the FBI has also been notified of the incident.
Back in July 2022, Chauvin pleaded guilty to federal charges of violating the civil rights of Floyd, a Black Minneapolis man, by keeping his knee pressed on his neck during a May 25, 2020 arrest, which resulted in his death.
Derek Chauvin was later sentenced to 21 years in federal prison.
