Fani Willis, the Georgia prosecutor announced that arrest warrants have been issued for the former US President, Donald Trump, and his 18 co-defendants and issued them a strict deadline to turn themselves in.
The Fulton County district attorney announced after a grand jury handed up 13 felony indictments against Trump for his apparent tries to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in the state.
The charges include RICO, plot to commit fraud, filing fraudulent documents, Solicitation of Violation of Oath by Public Officer, and others.
Furthermore, 18 Trump co-defendants have also been charged, including Mark Meadows, the former White House chief of staff, and Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor.
The Georgia prosecutor told reporters on Monday night that following the accusation, as is the usual method in Georgia law, the grand jury issues arrest warrants for those who were accused. I am offering the defendants the prospect to willingly surrender no later than the 25th day of August 2023, noon on Friday.
Fani Willis explained what she had investigated as an illegal conspiracy to overturn the 2020 presidential election’s result in this state. She added that the defendants had the criminal purpose of allowing Donald J Trump to hold the presidential tenure of office starting on January 20, 2021.
Ms. Willis added that all of our nation’s elections are administered by the states which are assigned the obligation of providing an appropriate procedure and proper counting of the votes….the state’s role in this method is important to the functioning of our democracy.
Georgia had a lawful process for anyone who liked to challenge election outcomes to do so in courts in the state, she added.
The charge alleges that rather than abide by Georgia’s lawful method for election challenges the defendants committed an illegal racketeering business to overturn Georgia’s presidential election result, Ms. Willis said.
She added that she is pursuing a trial date in the lawsuit within the next six months.
Ms. Willis said that this office will be offering a suggested scheduling order within this week. However, that will be the self-restraint of the judge.
And she added that she liked to try all of the 19 defendants together in the case.
