Last year, the United States recorded the highest number of suicides in 2022, with more than 49,000 people, suicides, taking their lives, according to government data.
On Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) posted data indicating suicides were becoming more common in the US than at any period since World War II.
Since 1941, US suicides consistently increased from the 2000s to 2018 when the US rate reach its highest level. That year witnessed about 48,300 recorded suicide deaths which is 14.2 for every 100,000 Americans.
But in 2019, the suicide rate dropped and so did in 2020. Some specialists linked that rising suicide rate to a phenomenon seen in the earlier phases of battles and natural disasters when people manage to drag together and help each other.
But the next year, suicides increased by 4 percent in 2021. That year, according to new data, the number of suicides rose by more than 1,000 to 49,449 which is a 3 percent rose compared to the year before.
In 2022, the CDC data showed that men accounted for almost 79 percent of the total number of suicides.
9 out of 10 Americans think the US is encountering a mental health concern and the recent CDC data explains why, Xavier Becerra, the US Health Secretary said in a statement.
Becerra added in a statement that in the US many people still think that asking for help is a sign of weakness.
