WASHINGTON: In a symbolic return to the White House after his recent electoral victory, President-elect Donald Trump met with outgoing President Joe Biden on Wednesday to discuss the upcoming transition of power. The meeting, held in the Oval Office, marked a moment of unity between two leaders with a long history of political rivalry.

Upon Trump’s arrival, Biden greeted him warmly, saying, “Welcome back.” The outgoing president, committed to a smooth transition, assured Trump of full cooperation. “It’ll be as smooth as it can get,” Trump replied, setting a conciliatory tone for the meeting.

A Shift from Years of Political Hostility

The meeting signaled a notable departure from the contentious relationship that has characterized interactions between the two leaders over the years. Biden, 81, has consistently criticized Trump, portraying him as a potential threat to democratic principles, while Trump, 78, has repeatedly questioned Biden’s competency. These opposing perspectives have underscored their differences on issues such as climate change, foreign policy, and trade. After Biden’s 2020 victory, Trump notably disputed the results, alleging widespread voter fraud without substantiation.

Despite this backdrop, Trump arrived at the White House in a heavily protected motorcade and was welcomed into the Oval Office, where the two leaders discussed critical issues. Outside, a sizable crowd of journalists gathered, eager to capture this historic moment of reconciliation and cooperation.

Celebrations and Preparations Amid Transition

Earlier in the day, Trump celebrated his election victory with House Republicans, who are likely to maintain control following the November 5 elections. “It’s nice to win,” Trump remarked, applauding the House’s strong showing. His triumph comes after Biden, who had initially run for reelection in 2024, stepped aside to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.

As the Oval Office meeting took place, preparations were already underway outside the White House for the upcoming inauguration parade, set to take place on January 20 when Trump will officially take office.

Transitional Challenges and Cooperation

While Biden has pledged a seamless transition, there have been some delays in formalizing logistical agreements. Trump’s team has yet to complete necessary agreements for access to federal resources, including office space, equipment, and communication channels, according to White House sources. Trump’s transition spokesperson, Brian Vance, confirmed that constructive discussions with the Biden administration are ongoing, adhering to the Presidential Transition Act’s requirements.

Valerie Smith Boyd, director of the Center for Presidential Transition, emphasized the importance of formalizing these agreements, explaining that they ensure a smooth handover between administrations. “These agreements are critical to allow interactions with federal agencies,” Boyd said.

A Diplomatic Discussion on Foreign Policy

Inside the Oval Office, Biden and Trump reportedly delved into foreign policy discussions, including the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Biden expressed the strategic importance of supporting Ukraine to maintain a stable Europe, which he views as essential to U.S. national security interests. Trump has stated his intention to end the war quickly but has yet to outline specific plans.

The conversation was notable for its focus on cooperation and shared interests, marking a stark contrast to previous interactions between the two leaders. White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre described Biden’s decision to invite Trump as a commitment to uphold democratic traditions, noting that Biden’s respect for the peaceful transfer of power played a significant role in the meeting.

Reflecting on Biden’s Decision to Step Aside

This Oval Office meeting was the first between the two men since their final debate in June, a contest that sparked concerns among some Democrats over Biden’s age and capacity to lead another term. Biden’s eventual decision to endorse Harris as the Democratic nominee cleared the way for Trump’s victory. However, Trump’s path to the presidency included a shortened campaign from Harris, who ultimately conceded to Trump.

As the nation watches this rare moment of cooperation, the Trump-Biden meeting is a reminder of the enduring importance of unity during transitions of power, even amid profound political differences.
