The United States Air Force airman, Jack Teixeira, has been officially charged with leaking confidential intelligence and defence documents related to the war in Ukraine and sensitive secrets about American allies. Teixeira, who is 21 years old, was arrested by armed FBI agents at his family home in Massachusetts on Thursday.
The documents were leaked via a Discord chat room that Teixeira was allegedly the administrator of, where members would often discuss geopolitical affairs and wars. According to an FBI affidavit, Teixeira began posting the leaked documents some time in December 2022. The initial leaks were in the form of paragraphs of text, but Teixeira then moved on to posting photographs of documents in January.
The leaked material revealed US assessments of the war in Ukraine as well as sensitive secrets about American allies. The leaks embarrassed Washington and raised fresh questions over the security of classified information.
Teixeira is charged with unauthorised transmission of defence information and unauthorised removal and retention of classified documents. He faces up to 15 years in prison over the charges. Teixeira remains in custody until his detention trial on 19 April. US prosecutors have asked that he remain detained until his trial at a later date.
Teixeira worked as an IT specialist in the intelligence wing of the Massachusetts National Guard, based at Otis Air National Guard Base in western Cape Cod. He held the rank of Airman 1st Class – a relatively junior position.
Teixeira held a “top secret” security clearance since 2021 and would have “signed a lifetime binding non-disclosure agreement” to take on his role. The FBI affidavit alleged that Teixeira used his government computer to search classified intelligence reporting for the word “leak” on 6 April, the day when public reporting about the documents first emerged.
The leaks have led to fresh questions over the security of classified information in the US, and it is yet to be seen what action will be taken to prevent further incidents like this in the future.
