A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck Pakistan and Afghanistan, causing tremors that were felt in cities across India on Tuesday.
A powerful earthquake struck northeast Afghanistan, causing fatalities and damage across the region. According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake measured 6.5 on the Richter scale and had a depth of 187.6 km.
As of now, the death toll has risen to five, with two fatalities reported in Afghanistan’s Laghman province and three in northern Pakistan, including two children. Eight people were injured in Laghman province, while 41 others were injured in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan.
Bilal Faizi, spokesperson for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial rescue services, reported that landslides have blocked roads in the northern Pakistani city of Abbotabad.
“The quake was so strong and terrifying, we thought houses are collapsing on us, people were all shouting and were shocked,” said Shafiullah Azimi, a Kabul resident.
The earthquake has caused widespread destruction in the affected areas, and rescue teams are working around the clock to provide assistance to those affected by the disaster.
The authorities are urging people to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as aftershocks are expected in the coming days.
