On Wednesday, Pakistan’s high court rejected a plea by imprisoned former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, that his conviction on corruption accusations be suspended, Khan’s lawyer said, indicating it was far-fetched he would be freed on bail anytime soon.
A 70-year-old ex-PM has been at the core of political rage since he was dismissed last year as the Islamic nation’s prime minister in a no-confidence vote, increasing worries about Pakistan’s peace as it struggles with an economic crisis.
Khan has been obstructed from controlling any public office for five years since he began a three-year jail sentence on Saturday on accusations of illegally selling state gifts, received by him and his family, during his term as Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022.
The high court asked the authorities to respond to ex-PM’s request to be transferred to an A-Class jail cell in a prison in Rawalpindi,
The court asked the concerned authorities to respond to Khan’s plea to be moved to an A-class jail cell in a prison in Rawalpindi, which has more suitable facilities that he is qualified for as an ex-prime minister, Naeem Panjutha, Khan’s lawyer said outside the high court.
The suit was adjourned for an indefinite time, Panjutha said, adding; “Our plea to suspend the conviction wasn’t accepted.”
