The King of Thailand has commuted the prison term of Thaksin Shinawatra, the former Prime Minister of Thailand, to one year from an eight-year term, a day after the ex-Thai PM submitted a plea for pardon.
The billionaire reached Thailand last week in a dramatic homecoming, reaching on a private jet and welcoming supporters before being shifted to jail. But on his first night in prison, he was shifted to a police hospital, with authorities mentioning chest pains and high blood pressure.
On Friday, the Royal Gazette said that Thaksin admitted his crime and demonstrated guilt.
Thai tycoon’s return last week coincided with political supporter and fellow billionaire Srettha Thavisin succeeding in a parliamentary vote to become prime minister that same day, with pro-military parties supporting his Pheu Thai Party, founded by the Shinawatra family.
The Royal Gazette added that the 74-year-old was a prime minister of Thailand, had done good for the nation and people, and was dedicated to the monarchy.
The Gazette read that Thaksin respected the procedure, acknowledged his remorse, repented, accepted court judgments and Right now he is old, has a disease that requires caring from a medical professional.
